Small Group Training 101: Everything You Should Know

August 11, 2019

Whether you’re familiar with the world of health and fitness or are just exploring different ways to love and improve your body, you may have noticed that small group training is on the rise. Gyms and personal training studios have started rolling out small group training programs to appeal to their patrons. The wide variety may have you wondering what you should know about these classes and if they’re for you.

What is small group training?

Small group training is a workout method that allows an individual to experience the benefit of a personal trainer in a small-group (10 or fewer people) atmosphere. It provides a high-quality experience to the individual through a variety of different avenues. These may include an equipment-based, a technique or skill-based, or an outcome-based class. No two small group training classes ever have to be the same, which means they can appeal to low, medium or high-intensity clients.

Is small group training for me?

If you’ve never tried small group training before, you may be nervous to jump in without learning more. Is it something you’d like? How is it different from other types of workouts you’ve done before? The unknown can be one of the scariest parts in any new situation. There are a couple of actions that can help with these questions and doubts ahead of time.

First, do research on the small group training class you want to try in advance. Understand what the exercises may be like and if the class is for beginners or experienced participants. If you’re unsure of certain movements or exercises, it’s always best to start at a beginner level and work your way up.

Second, understand the time commitment. Small group training is often at least a 4 to 6 week commitment and cannot always accommodate individual schedule conflicts. Ideally, you’d be able to commit to a small group program without any conflicts at all, so you want to choose the right one for you!

Third, if you’re nervous before your first class, one of the best ways to prepare is by talking to staff! They can help reassure you about the types of movement and activities that you’ll do in the class. Knowing that it is your first class can also help the instructor explain or potentially modify anything unfamiliar so you can feel comfortable as you learn and improve.

What are the benefits of small group training?

Small group training is a great option for someone who wants the benefit of a personal trainer without the cost. It can often be difficult to hit the gym on your own without knowing what to do. The small group training atmosphere provides guidance to reach goals and helps you get more individualized support and attention than you would otherwise. It also helps you feel a greater sense of commitment to your fitness and health than you may otherwise feel if you were only beholden to yourself.
